Carpet Maintenance Tips

What You Need to Know About Carpet Maintenance To Make Your Life Easier

Carpet cleaning can appear to be a tedious chore. There's vacuuming, spot cleaning, and regular professional carpet cleaning that's required when a home owner has carpets in their house. If you have children or pets - then carpet cleaning maintenance seems to be double the work. There are actually a few little things that you should know about maintaining your carpet that will help prolong the life of it and make your life easier.

Vacuuming your carpet regularly is a great start in reducing your future workload. Ideally, they can be vacuumed up to 4 times a week with no ill effect on the quality of the carpet. This helps to eliminate dirt build up and thereby lessen the amount of times you will need your carpet professionally cleaned.

The other method of dry cleaning involves sprinkling a powder onto the carpet which is then worked into the carpet. This powder is highly absorbent and when vacuumed out it removes the powder and soil together.

A regular professional clean, whether once or twice a year is also important. Many nasty asthma triggering dust mites live in carpet. So if you have a family member with asthma, it is important to regularly clean your carpet thoroughly to help reduce the build up of dust mites and dirt. It also helps reduce the strength of chemicals required for cleaning. If your carpet is very dirty, stronger chemicals are generally needed to help remove the dirt.

If you are able to reduce the worst of the dirt coming inside from the outside, then you will also reduce your cleaning time. Have quality outdoor mats for people to clean their shoes off before entering your home. Use extra mats at all entrance points to the house, then only these mats will need cleaning. Shoes carry copious amounts of dirt, ensuring that people take their shoes off before walking on your carpet should help prevent abrasives scratch and abrade your fiber and de-luster your carpet.

It is also vital that when a spill occurs, that you attended to it immediately. Always keep a good spot remover in your cleaning supplies. The sooner you can get to it and clean it up the the less likely it will become a permanent stain.

Carpet Cleaning Tip - This Tip is on How to Clean Your Own Carpet With a Steam Cleaner

If you want to to steam clean your carpet with a rented machine like a rug doctor or a carpet cleaning machine you already own, you need to make sure you use the right soap to water ratio. I repeat it is very important that you use the right soap to water ratio because you if do not rinse the soap out of the carpet the soil that is tracked in from outside will stick to the soap that is left in your carpet. After a couple of weeks your carpet will start to turn black and probably look worse then it did before you cleaned your carpet.

The traffic lanes will start to show your carpet needs cleaning first. The best way to reduce the traffic lanes from being heavily soiled is to use place mat's and to vacuum on a regular basis, because the soil will scratch the fiber which will make your carpet look dull.

To clean your own carpet use the right ratio of soap to water in you carpet cleaning machine. Start from one side of your room and work to the other side of the from. Make sure you don't over wet the carpet because you might cause your carpet to have discoloration or your carpet might shrink. Also if you use to much water on your carpet you run the risk of your backing to separate from the fibers. Make sure you rinse out all of the soap that's why you don't want to put a lot of preconditioner in the machine. If you clean under your furniture make sure you put plastic pieces under your legs of your furniture. If you don't put plastic under the legs the finish will strip off and stain your carpet. If the legs on your furniture are metal it will leave rust stains on your carpet.

How To Clean A Food Spill On Carpet

How To Clean A Food And Drink Spill On Carpet

In my previous article I wrote an article about how to clean up a food spill on your carpet by picking up the spill with a spoon or by your hands. I also said be careful to pick up the food spill with a towel because you run the risk of making the food spill larger by smearing it.

After you pick up the food spill from your carpet you need to rinse the carpet with water. Rinse your carpet with water using a spray bottle (spritzer) and blot with a paper towel or a micro fiber towel.

Most of the sticky residue can be removed with water. Do not over wet your carpet. Water should not go into your padding. If you over saturate your carpet to where the water goes into your padding the padding will take a very long time to dry and it can cause mold which you do not want.

A lot of the spotters say its a no rinse stain remover but you should still rinse it with water and blot.

The reason you want to rinse the spot with water and blot with FOLEX Instant Carpet Spot Remover is because soil will stick to the stain that's in your carpet and become visible again.

You will notice it a couple of weeks later after you cleaned the spot. The spot will become dark again because soil sticks to the remaining residual. So use the spotter after you cleaned up the food spill and blot with a towel.

Apply FOLEX Instant Carpet Spot Remover to the the stain and blot by using a paper towel or a micro fiber towel. You blot by taking the towel and pushing straight down. Hold for a few seconds and lift. The stain should be transferring to the white towel. Once the stain stops transferring to the clean part of the towel apply Folex and let it sit. Once its dry vacuum it.  The stain should be gone.
